Day 2 of our NCAA Tournament Trip
Touring the Oregon Coast

March 16, 2012

Friday Day 2 NCAA Trip

Friday we awoke to clear skies and at breakfast Friday morning we where talking with three traveling buddies who go to allot of thru NCAA games and they pointed there is a train station two blocks from the hotel that takes us right to the arena for $5 a person. That is our plan for Saturday afternoon games.

We are off to see the Oregon coast today as there is not game until Saturday afternoon. We are in our trusty auto with the GPS running and heading north on Highway 5 looking to turn West the South on the pacific coast at Astoria, Oregon The main theme is to stop at the Tillamook for Ice Cream... They are known for their cheese but for Ice Cream I will drive a fair distance...

We headed up I-5 and notice the wide open plains of Oregon. We approached this very steep hill and we drove up the hill we stopped and took a few pictures.

We then continued up the road and turning west we drove along the Columbia river. Wow is long and wide extending al the way into Idaho. The trees are covered with moss and dense. As we drove we came upon the Columbia River Maritime Museum in Astoria, Oregon Before this town we actually got into the Washington State for about 15 minutes as the road went that way.

The Maritime Museum was fascinating as they talked about the BAR the area between the river and the pacific ocean that is very rough and they lost many ships in this area.

We toured what I call a light house ship that was stationed 5 miles off the coast for at least three months at a time and manned by people. I cant image sitting on a ship that is anchored just to provide a light house. In later years it was replaced with a automated light house the just floated in the water at that very same point. And then now days a fully automated device and is supported by GPS & Loran.

The area in and around Astoria was Victorian type houses built on the hill side. Most where built before the 1900.

It was getting time for lunch so we looked for a good place to eat lunch and I was reminded it was Friday so Fish & Chips where in order. A nice place Diggers Seafood and Grill.

We are now headed South on 101 and looking for a place to stop and walk on the beach. We located an area called Ocala State Park to do some hiking. it was cool and cloudy. Diana had been there before on a business trip and she remembered the area.

When we where getting gas on the coast I pulled up to a Shell station and of course the gas tank is on the wrong side and the car and the fine gentleman who was standing here told me. But who is the gentleman, as he opened my car door and asked what kind of gas I wanted. What the heck, I can do this and he said "In Oregon and New Jersey the customer is not allowed to fill their tank with gas". You got to be kidding be kidding I am not helpless but that is the law.

Heading down south we are looking for the Ice cream place. It is in Tillamook..

We then headed east and back to our hotel in Portland (9 hour trip) in our trusty car:
